Traditional decorated buttercream wedding cakes have been trending already for 2025. Bride’s have been choosing elaborate decorated buttercream style wedding cakes. The traditional wedding cake designs were first made popular in the U.S. by the Wilton company, with it’s “over the top” unique designs the Wilton cakes shaped an entire generation style of decorated wedding cakes. The company began in 1929 by Dewey Mckinley Wilton who had an incredible passion for confectionery art. Even today many wedding couples are choosing elaborate decorated wedding cakes inspired by Wilton. In the early 1990’s the wedding cake was beaded in a fashion to resemble the bridal dress which had an amazing amount of beadwork sewn into the elegant gowns. For example, the damask wedding gown pattern started appearing on decorated wedding cakes at that time. Then later in the early 2000’s the buttercream decorated cake became less flashy with bride’s choosing a less elaborate decoration for the wedding cake because wedding gowns became less ornate and slimming like the “mermaid” style wedding gown.
